Eric Carr of Kiss Died Twenty Years Ago

Kiss drummer Eric Carr, who joined the band just prior to the recording of ‘Music from the Elder,’ passed away twenty years ago today (Nov. 24, 1991).

You can only imagine the surprise Carr felt upon joining the band back in 1981, only to find out that instead of heading into the studio to record a balls to the wall hard rock album with the legendary Kiss, he’d instead be joining the band on an (forgive us) ‘Odyssey’ of unprecedented and perhaps unwise scale.

Of course, the band got back to a more straight-ahead, if somewhat modernized sound, for subsequent albums such as ‘Creatures of the Night’ and ‘Animalize.’ Carr ended up recording seven records, most very successful, with the band before falling to heart cancer after a brave year-long battle in 1991.

Holy Cow, Someone’s Making an ‘Elder’ Movie!!!

So it turns out, the same day we announced our Kiss ‘Music from the Elder’ book, an Englishman named Seb Hunter, who has already released several very cool looking music-related books of his own, revealed plans to produce a film version of the ‘Elder’ story.

Creating a movie based on this concept album was reportedly Kiss’s intention prior to the release of the record — they envisioned the platter as merely the beginning of a multi-platform media campaign. Obviously, this didn’t work out, and the project lay dormant for three full decades.

On a related topic, the early response to our book announcement — the hundreds of people who signed up to get the first chapter, and the dozens who have offered support or resources so far — has been absolutely amazing and heartwarming. Learning about Hunter’s film was definitely the most exciting of those messages.

Still, we also had to wonder: what kind of a fool would dedicate so much time to a creative endeavor about by far the least popular album Kiss has ever..oh…right…never mind.

Kiss Kruise Features Surprise ‘Music from the Elder’ Medley

Kiss surprised fans during a special unplugged (and makeup free) performance on last month’s Kiss Kruise by performing a brief three-song medley of ‘Music from the Elder’ songs. Considering that the band didn’t seem to have rehearsed any of these numbers, it’s pretty impressive how much they remember. Could a full-album ‘Elder’ tour be far behind? Well.. probably not.
